Your downspouts may not get much thought, but they do big work. They are the vertical pipes that carry rainwater from your gutters down and away from your home. Together, gutters and downspouts protect your roof, walls, and foundation from water damage. If you do not have enough downspouts, water can back up and cause costly problems. So how many does your home actually need? Let’s break it down.
How Gutters and Downspouts Work Together
Your gutter system has two main parts: the gutters and the downspouts.
- Gutters are the channels along the edge of your roof. They catch rainwater and guide it off the roof. This protects your walls, roofing, and foundation, and helps prevent soil erosion and leaks.
- Downspouts are the vertical pipes that connect to your gutters. They carry the collected water down and route it away from your home. The curve at the bottom points the water away from your foundation, where it can do the most harm.
How Many Downspouts Do I Need?
A simple guideline can help. As a rule of thumb, you want one downspout for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter. A single downspout should not have to drain much more than that on its own. A few things can change the number you need:
- Roof area. A bigger roof catches more rain, so it needs more downspouts to keep up.
- Roof slope. A steeper roof sheds water faster, which calls for more downspouts.
- Gutter size. Smaller gutters move water more slowly, so they may need extra downspouts.
- Climate. This is a big one in our markets. Heavy, frequent rain puts more water through your gutters. Ft. Myers sees intense subtropical downpours, and Kennesaw and Franklin get strong spring and summer storms. More downspouts help handle that load.
Types of Downspouts
Worried downspouts will be an eyesore? They do not have to be. A few styles can even add to your home’s look:
- Rectangular. The most common and efficient choice. They come in many sizes and materials and fit most gutters.
- Round. A more stylish option with the same function. You will often see these on older and historic homes.
- Custom. Made to match your home’s exact look. These cost more and usually need professional installation.
Caring for Your Downspouts
Like the rest of your roof, downspouts need a little upkeep. Clean them regularly, check for leaks, and make sure they stay firmly attached. With good care, downspouts often last as long as your gutters, about 20 years for aluminum. Watch for these signs of trouble:
- Water pooling around your foundation
- Gutters overflowing when it rains
- Visible cracks or damage on the downspouts
If you spot any of these, it may be time for a repair or an upgrade.
