Your roof protects your home from everything nature throws at it — storms, wind, hail, and more. But did you know your own holiday decorating can damage it too? Hanging lights the wrong way can crack shingles, void your warranty, and cause leaks. The good news: a few simple precautions keep your roof safe. Here’s how to decorate safely this holiday season in Middle Tennessee and North Georgia.
Safety Tips for Hanging Holiday Lights
- Hire a pro if you’re unsure. If you’re not comfortable on the roof, or don’t know how to install lights safely, hire someone. It’s not worth a fall — especially on a cold, wet, or icy winter day.
- Always have a helper on the ground. They can guide you and watch for safety while you work.
- Test your lights first. Check that every strand works before you climb up.
- Use outdoor-rated lights. Only use lights made for outdoor use, and check that the wires aren’t frayed, to avoid a fire hazard.
- Never attach lights to your shingles. This can damage the shingles, void your roof warranty, and cause leaks.
- Skip rooftop inflatables. Strong winter winds can blow them right off your roof — common here during our windy cold fronts.
- Mind the weight. Don’t put more on your roof than it can safely hold, or you risk real damage.
- Use clips, not nails. Never use nails, staples, or screws on your roof or gutters. Use plastic gutter clips or electrical tape instead, which protect your shingles, wood, and gutters.
Want Lights Without the Yearly Risk?
If climbing up every year isn’t appealing, permanent holiday lighting is worth a look. Our sister company, Northpoint Trimlight, installs permanent LED lighting that mounts once and lasts for years — controlled from an app, with no ladders and no roof damage.
