How to Hang Holiday Decorations Without Damaging Your Roof

Ready to deck the halls? Before you hang lights on your roof, take a few minutes to plan. Decorating the wrong way can lead to costly roof repairs. In Middle Tennessee and North Georgia, winter brings cold snaps, rain, and the odd ice day — and that makes a roof slick and risky to climb. Here’s how to show your holiday spirit without harming your roof or yourself.

Get a Roof Inspection Frist

Before you decorate, have a roofer check for damage. A fall storm may have loosened shingles you can’t see from the ground. A damaged roof is a safety risk once you add ladders, lights, and foot traffic. Fix any problems first, then decorate. Our roof inspections are free.

Untangle and Check You Lights

Take time to unwind your lights and cords. Look for frayed wires, cracked sockets, or bare spots. Damaged lights are a fire and shock hazard — both for your roof and for you. Throw out any string that looks worn.

Use Clips, Not Staples or Nails

Never staple or nail decorations into your roof or fascia. Each hole is a future leak. Use plastic clips or zip ties made for gutters and shingles instead. They hold well and leave no damage.

Don’t Overload Your Gutters or Roofline

Heavy light strands and inflatables can bend gutters and stress your roofline. Spread the weight out. Clip lights to the edge in a way that doesn’t pull on the gutter.

Stay Off the Roof When You Can

Try not to walk on your roof. Foot traffic can crack shingles, and a wet or icy winter roof is dangerous. Use a ladder from the ground, or hire a pro. If you must go up, wait for a dry day and have someone spot you.

Take Your Lights Down Gently

When the season ends, remove your lights with care. Don’t yank cords loose, since that can pull clips — and even shingles — with them. Leaving lights up too long also traps moisture and invites pests.

FAQ

Do you walk on the roof, or just inspect from the ground?

We walk the roof on every inspection where it’s safe to do so. Drone-and-camera-only inspections miss bruising, soft spots, and seal failure that you can only verify by hand and foot. Ground-only inspections miss almost everything. If pitch or weather makes a foot inspection unsafe, we use a combination of drone, ladder access, and a return visit.

Is the inspection really free? What’s the catch?

It is genuinely free. There is no catch and no obligation. We do them because they generate trust, and trust is what brings homeowners back to us when their neighbor needs a roof. About a quarter of the inspections we do across Franklin result in zero work — we tell the homeowner their roof is fine and walk away.

What if my roof is leaking right now — will you tarp it?

Yes. We do emergency tarping for active leaks across Franklin and Williamson County. Most carriers reimburse this expense; we document everything and submit it as part of the claim. Call us first, then your insurance company — in that order — if water is currently coming inside.

Do you serve both Georgia and Tennessee?

Yes. We serve homeowners across Kennesaw, GA, Franklin, TN, and surrounding areas.
