What’s Included in a Roofing Warranty?

A new roof is a big investment, and a good warranty is what protects it. But roof warranties can be confusing, because there’s more than one kind. Here’s a simple guide to what they cover — and why it matters for homeowners in Middle Tennessee and North Georgia, where storms test every roof.

  • Materials Warranty
    • The first kind covers the shingles and materials. Top brands offer a limited lifetime warranty on their materials, which lasts as long as you own the home. It mainly covers bad materials — when a product fails to work the way it should.
    • But here’s the catch: it won’t cover materials that fail from a bad install. That’s why your contractor matters as much as your materials. We use top materials from GAF, CertainTeed, and Atlanta Metal Works.
  • Workmanship Warranty
    • The second kind covers the work itself — the install. A good contractor stands behind their work in writing. Terms vary by company. At Northpoint, we back our work for 10 years against defects.
  • Manufacturer’s Warranty
    • The third kind comes from the maker. Big brands like GAF and CertainTeed cover both the materials and the approved install steps. Each has a full guide so you can see what fits you best. On a qualifying GAF roof installed by a Master Elite contractor like us, you can step up to the Golden Pledge® — GAF’s strongest plan. You can find the GAF and CertainTeed details on our warranties page.

Why It Matters Here

In our climate, a roof takes a beating from heat, humidity, and storms. Strong coverage means you’re protected if something goes wrong. And a warranty that transfers — like the Golden Pledge® — is a real selling point when you list your home, which is a plus in markets like Franklin and Kennesaw.

FAQ

Is GAF Master Elite® the same as GAF Certified?

No. “GAF Certified” is the entry-level credential and is much more common. “GAF Master Elite®” is the top tier — less than 2% of roofers in the U.S. carry it. Only Master Elite contractors can register Golden Pledge® warranties.

Why hire a GAF Master Elite® contractor for an insurance claim?

Two reasons. First, Master Elite contractors install to the manufacturer’s strictest specification, which gives you access to GAF’s System Plus, Silver Pledge, or Golden Pledge® warranties. Second, only a Master Elite installer can register a Golden Pledge® — the strongest manufacturer warranty in residential roofing, and a credential adjusters and homeowners both recognize.

Is the Golden Pledge® warranty really transferable?

Yes, with a small administrative step. The warranty transfers to a new homeowner if you sell the property and follow GAF’s transfer process. We’ll walk any Franklin client who’s selling through the steps. A transferable warranty is a real value-add on a Williamson County listing.

Do I have to use GAF shingles to get the Master Elite warranty?

Yes — the Master Elite warranties are GAF’s own product, so they require GAF system components. We use GAF as our primary line on Franklin homes anyway because the warranty stack is the strongest available, and the shingle quality is class-leading.

Why don’t more Kennesaw contractors have Master Elite?

Because it’s hard to get and hard to keep. The certification requires verifiable longevity, ongoing factory training for crews, ongoing licensing and insurance verification, and a clean reputation record. The 96% of home-improvement contractors who don’t survive five years can’t hold a credential like this. The credential is, in part, the point: it filters out the contractors most likely to disappear after the next hailstorm.
