You probably know what your shingles are made of. But there is an important part of your roof you cannot see from the street: the decking. Roof decking, also called sheathing, is the layer that holds your whole roof together. Let’s look at what it is, why it matters, and how to tell when it needs attention.
Types of Roof Decking
There are two main types of roof decking.
- Plank decking. Long, narrow wooden boards, usually 1 by 6 or 1 by 8 inches. Builders used plank decking for decades before plywood arrived. Many older homes around Kennesaw and Franklin still have it.
- Sheet decking. Wide, flat sheets of wood. The two common kinds are plywood and oriented strand board, or OSB. OSB is made from compressed wood chips and is popular today. Your choice often comes down to budget and what is in stock.
Some roofs also use metal panels or composite panels. Composite panels mix different materials and can add extra insulation.
Why Roof Decking Matters
Roof decking is easy to forget, since you never see it. But it does a lot of important work. Good decking:
- Gives your roof structure and support
- Spreads out the weight of your roofing materials and any rain or snow
- Helps your roof last longer
- Helps block leaks
Without solid decking, the rest of your roof cannot do its job.
Signs Your Roof Decking Needs Attention
Decking does not last forever. Over time, it can wear out or take on damage. Watch for these warning signs:
- A sagging or uneven roof surface
- Water damage or leaks in your attic
- Rot, mold, or other decay
- Pests or insects in the roof structure
In our humid Southern climate, trapped moisture is a common cause of rot. The sooner you catch it, the less you will spend to fix it.
When to Replace Roof Decking
Two things tell you it may be time to replace your decking: damage and age. If you see any of the warning signs above, have a pro take a look. Age matters too. Most roof decking lasts about 20 to 30 years. The exact lifespan depends on the materials and the wear your roof has taken. Replacement cost depends on the type of decking and the labor involved. A roofer can give you a clear estimate after an inspection.
