What Is a GAF Master Elite® Roofing Contractor? | TN & GA

When you hire a roofer, their credentials matter — maybe more than you think. The top credential in the industry is GAF Master Elite®. Fewer than 2% of roofing contractors in the U.S. earn it. Here’s what it means, why it’s so hard to get, and why it matters for homeowners in Middle Tennessee and North Georgia.

Why It Matters Here

Our storm-prone markets attract “storm chasers” — out-of-town crews that blow in after a hailstorm, do quick work, and disappear before problems show up. A Master Elite contractor is the opposite: an established, vetted local company that will still be here to honor your warranty years from now. That peace of mind is the whole point of the credential.

How a Roofer Earns Master Elite®

GAF puts contractors through a strict review of their work and business before granting Master Elite status. To qualify, a roofer must have:

  • At least 7 years in business (plus a year in GAF’s certified program)
  • 99% customer satisfaction on independent GAF surveys
  • $1 million in general liability coverage and valid workers’ comp
  • A satisfactory BBB rating
  • A good credit rating and clean banking record
  • Clean distributor references (they pay their bills)
  • No unresolved liens or judgments
  • A strong workmanship record

Most contractors can’t meet all of this — which is exactly why fewer than 2% qualify. (Northpoint Roofing is one of them.)

The GAF Golden Pledge® Warranty

Here’s the biggest payoff: only a Master Elite roofer can offer the GAF Golden Pledge® — the strongest warranty in residential roofing. With it, all your roofing materials are GAF, and after your roof is finished, GAF itself comes out to certify the workmanship. The same company that made the materials stands behind the install.

The coverage is serious: a 50-year limited warranty on materials and a 25-year workmanship warranty, including the cost of labor and tear-off for covered issues. That’s protection most contractors simply can’t offer.

FAQ

Is GAF Master Elite® the same as GAF Certified?

No. “GAF Certified” is the entry-level credential and is much more common. “GAF Master Elite®” is the top tier — less than 2% of roofers in the U.S. carry it. Only Master Elite contractors can register Golden Pledge® warranties.

Why don’t more Kennesaw contractors have Master Elite?

Because it’s hard to get and hard to keep. The certification requires verifiable longevity, ongoing factory training for crews, ongoing licensing and insurance verification, and a clean reputation record. The 96% of home-improvement contractors who don’t survive five years can’t hold a credential like this. The credential is, in part, the point: it filters out the contractors most likely to disappear after the next hailstorm.

Is the Golden Pledge® warranty really transferable?

Yes, with a small administrative step. The warranty transfers to a new homeowner if you sell the property and follow GAF’s transfer process. We’ll walk any Franklin client who’s selling through the steps. A transferable warranty is a real value-add on a Williamson County listing.

Do I have to use GAF shingles to get the Master Elite warranty?

Yes — the Master Elite warranties are GAF’s own product, so they require GAF system components. We use GAF as our primary line on Franklin homes anyway because the warranty stack is the strongest available, and the shingle quality is class-leading.
